It’s an exciting day – my handsome little boy turns 6 today. Happy birthday to him!
And happy “birth” day to me! Giving birth was without a doubt, one of the most monumental moments in my lifetime. As every mom knows, welcoming your little one into this world is indescribable. Moms should celebrate the day themselves as well. So whooo-hoo to me today too!
Now, you’re probably curious how Carvel played a role in my son’s delivery? It’s a funny story.
When my daughter was born (she was my first baby), I was well past my due date, with no indication that she would be making an appearance anytime soon. So my doctor decided to induce labor. That didn’t work so well (that is a whole other post). After a long labor with horrible contractions, the baby hadn’t budged. It resulted in an emergency c-section. And thankfully, a beautiful, healthy baby girl was born.
Fast forward three years. I was pregnant again, and this time my doctor decided the safest option, because of my previous delivery issues, would be to schedule a c-section. When a c-section is scheduled in advance, the doctor usually picks a date a week or two before the actual due date. That way the baby doesn’t make a surprise appearance on its own.
So we picked April 9th as our baby’s birthday. We scheduled an 8am c-section appointment with the hospital for that day.
Lots of planning takes place when you have a toddler at home and are preparing for another to be born. My mother-in-law, Nana, was going to sleep over our house the night before, and watch our daughter the next day. Then Grandma (my mom), was coming to stay for a week after the baby was born.
I was definitely stressed about it all going well, and about having surgery again. So the day before the c-section, I had cleaned the house, finished all my laundry, got the beds ready for the two grandmas, made a meal plan for my toddler, and packed my hospital bag.
At 10pm, the night before the delivery date, I finally felt like I was ready. My husband was working until 11pm, so Nana
was already at our house. She told me to stop preparing, and just relax a little before the big day.
So I thought I’d have a little snack before bed. I re-read my surgery instructions and it said, “No Food After Midnight”. Perfect, it was only 10pm.
And then I remembered that I had a Carvel Ice Cream Cake lurking in my freezer.
In my defense, I was 9 months pregnant, hormonal, tired, and hungry. Very hungry, all the time. So you guessed it, I ate the whole cake. Well, to be fair… I left one little piece. Nana didn’t want any, but I do remember saving one for my mom who was coming the next day.
And let me tell you, it was DELICIOUS.
Then with my belly nice and full, I said goodnight to Nana, and proceeded to go upstairs to bed. On the way up the steps… MY WATER BROKE! I thought it was a joke for a minute. But no. My baby had decided to come, all on his own. If you read my previous story about his enthusiasm, you’ll see he was even enthusiastic about being born!
I calmly walked back down the stairs and told Nana, who thought I was teasing her. Nope. My water broke.
Then came chaos. We were both frantic for a couple of minutes. OMG, What do we do? Call the doctor. Call my husband (who works in TV, and was live on the air, while I frantically screamed into his voice mail – “THE BABY IS COMING NOW!”) And I remember Nana yelling – “I’m not delivering a baby here”!
Then we calmed down slightly. I spoke to my doctor, and he said that I needed to get to the hospital right away because they’d have to do a c-section immediately.
And that’s when I felt my belly grumble. THE ICE CREAM CAKE… Uh Oh!
I was completely embarrassed, but I figured he’s heard worse, so I told my doctor about the cake. He said, “that’s not good, but come to the hospital and we will figure it all out”.
So after waking my toddler, and telling her we had to go on an adventure. Nana drove us all to the hospital. When I got there, the nurses were expecting me, and one was yelling – “The Carvel Lady is here!”. I was mortified. But then the contractions started and I forgot about being embarrassed. They had to take special precautions during the c-section, since I had a full stomach. (It’s dangerous in case you throw up during surgery).
“Carvel” was discussed a lot. While I was getting my epidural, the doctor and nurses had a funny debate about the best ice creams cakes. Carvel won. I was known as the “Carvel Lady” to everyone. Also discussed a lot was the possibility that my labor had actually started all because of the Carvel cake. To this day, I am convinced it played a role.
All’s well that ends well…
Thankfully, that Carvel ice cream cake stayed in my belly and my baby boy was delivered at 1am on April 9th. Interestingly, he came into this world when he chose to, but it also ended up being the day we had chosen for him!
And every year on his birthday, we celebrate with… you guessed it, a Carvel ice cream cake!
Happy birthday my handsome little man. xxoo
