Who remembers the “2013 Blackout”?
It’s crazy that it was 15 years ago! How is that possible? I remember the day clearly. I was in NYC at the time, working at NBC at 30 Rock, and we were all on high-stress level after 9/11. So when the power went out in our offices, I remember saying… “we can figure out what’s going on later, but we need to get out of this building now.” So we ran 19 flights down the stairs, while reporters & anchors (one was Brian Williams), all ran back UP the stairs to the only studio with a generator.
We finally got out on the street & it was chaos. No one could figure out why the whole city had lost power, and terrorism was the only thought, so we were all completely freaked out. I had recently moved to NJ, so the plan was to try to get there. My good friend, and co-worker, Stacy & I, decided to stick together and try to figure out a way to get home. So we walked to the west side, and got in a line for a ferry to NJ… but it took hours to get on one. HOURS. No bathroom, no cell phones working, we just waited. Finally, at midnight, we got on a ferry and ended up in Hoboken, NJ.
Still 30 miles away from my house… and Hoboken was completely DARK. It was so weird. No lights, no streetlights, nothing. We were still panicked. And suddenly, out of nowhere, my boyfriend at the time (now husband), came riding down the dark Hoboken street on his bike! He was looking for us after I had called his cell from the ferry. He hopped on a different ferry out of the city with his bike and was riding up and down the dark Hoboken streets trying to find us. It was so crazy to see him coming down the dark street that night.
That’s probably when I decided he was a “keeper”. ❤️
Soon after, Stacy’s wife
It was a night I will NEVER forget.
