We each dive into parenthood expecting different things.
Some people imagine it as a blissful eden. Finally, the culmination of all their hopes and dreams… the time in their lives they have been waiting for. Envisioning a giggling baby who is so darn cute. Only unicorns and smiles are on the horizon.
Others, (who I call the “lucky ones”), have been sufficiently warned by friends or relatives…
Each of those statements is true. Being a parent means you will experience all kinds of smelly, messy, and weird stuff. A few examples…
- My nephew stuck a carrot up his nose. Why? Well, the better question is “Why not?” Unfortunately the experts had to be called in to help um… remove it. (The plus side? The discovery that pediatricians are equipped with some pretty cool tools!)
- At a neighbor’s birthday party, while making a plate of food, my 2 year old sneezed and I looked down. She had a HUGE booger, literally dangling out of her nose. Fearing we’d get kicked out; told to take my snot-nosed toddler home and to hibernate until she wouldn’t spread her cold to every other neighborhood kid; I scooped in and wiped snot with my sleeve. Someone else’s SNOT, with MY sleeve. I never imagined I’d do that willingly.
- I walk around every day singing the tune from various kids’ TV shows. Not only do I know ALL the words, but I catch myself humming them in line at the grocery store. I also sing them in the shower (if I ever get to actually shower alone). “Paw Patrol, Paw Patrol, We’ll there on the double”. I’m so afraid I will forget I ever liked cool music!
- Tonight at bedtime, I “fist-bumped” my son’s stuffed lion, and kissed his Matchbox car goodnight. Then I walked around spraying “monster spray” (Febreze in a fancy bottle labeled “Stay Away Monsters”). I briefly wondered if I was in an episode of The Twilight Zone! Nope, I’m just a mom.
Before parenthood, life may have seemed weird at times, but we promise, AFTER parenthood, that weird goes to a whole new level!
But it’s a good kind of WEIRD!
