Last week, I stumbled upon “When Breath Becomes Air”. One of my fellow book club ladies read it. Her feedback? “It’s sad, but also inspiring and really makes you reflect on life”.
I normally don’t choose memoirs. But something about it caught my attention. It was written by a man who chose to be a neurosurgeon. He spent years in college, grad school, medical school, and residency… And when he finally got to the point when all his hard work would pay off, and he would finally begin his career, and the life he put on hold for school; he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He spent years learning how to save others, only to end up needing saving.
Sad, heart-warming, inspiring…. it’s an amazing look at how someone feels when they know they are facing death. About what things are no longer important. And how they choose to spend their final days. He chose to write about it all.
“Even if I’m dying, until I actually die, I’m still living.”
~Paul Kalanithi
Like my friend said, it is very sad. But it is also so inspirational. A great read, indeed.
